NATIONAL YOUNG ATHLETES LEAGUE 21/06/09 ABINGDON

The Club’s younger members travelled to Portsmouth for the penultimate National Young Athletes League match of the season. They were up against the two teams who were heading the league on maximum points, Bournemouth/Poole and Hillingdon. despite being with out some of their strongest athletes the team acquitted themselves well.
One new Club records was set and another established. Under 13 boy Oliver Kitto sped over 75m hurdles in 12.7s for his new record. The pole vault has only very recently been a recognized event for Under 15 girls and Annabel Sharpe is the first Guildford girl to try her luck on the pole. In her very first competition she achieved the very creditable winning height of 2m 10. She also won the A string long jump and B string hurdles.
The under 15 girls were in outstanding form taking eight out of the eleven A string events. Vicky Maguire registered three A string wins–the high jump, the shot putt and the 75m hurdles in which she set a new lifetime best of 12.1. 800m specialists Maddy Austin and Matilda Rainsborough won the A and B races and they were followed by Poppy Disley May and Sophie Storey who took the A and B 1500m. Emily McDermott won the A javelin throwing it out to a lifetime best of 21m 69.
Toby Borthwick set a new best of 13.1 in winning the A Under 15 80m hurdles. Tom Butcher made it a clean sweep for the Gees winning the B race. Steven Lake won the A javelin with a lifetime best throw of 37m 50.
In the Under 17 group Eleanor Ball won the A 100m and Emily de Beaux won the B race. In her first track race of the season there was a win for Abbey Fewell in the 1500m when she made up a 20m deficit in the last 100m. Carole Date Chong and Giselle Cooper won the A and B javelin. The sprint relay team of Katie McDermott, Holly Findley, Giselle Cooper and Eleanor Ball won in a season’s best time of 52.5s
For the Under 17 boys there were personal best performances from Matthew Butler in the discus and Zach Gwyn-Griffiths in the 400m
Final points tally was Bournemouth and Poole 403.5, Hillingdon 395, Guildford and Godalming 357 and City of Portsmouth 315.5

Under 20 South of England Championships - June 21/22

There was success for Club athletes Ben Wallis and Adelle Tracey at the Under 20 South of England Championships at Watford. Both wins came in the 800m. Ben had to fight his way through two rounds before reaching the final which he won in a near best time of 1.53.93. In the previous week Wallis had broken his own Club record for the event in a British Milers Club Nike Grand Prix race again at Watford where he ran 1.53.29.
Sixteen -year old Adelle, National Under 17 number one, moved up an age group, looking for good competition to improve on her personal best of 2.07.57. She was however a comfortable winner in 2.11.29.
In the Under 20 200m Isabelle Stanway reached the final with a heat time of 25.98. In the final she finished seventh improving her time to 25.96.

LILY B LEAGUE - JUNE 6 TH AT SUTTON

The Club had another convincing win in the Lily B league at the weekend. The final points totals were - G &G 356, Reigate Priory 238, Sutton 180, Hercules Wimbledon 95 and Aldershot 61.

Rebecca Dingemans made light of a strong wind and won the Under 13 A string 100m, 200m and 800m before leading the sprint relay team of Freya Savage, Nicola Black and Eleanor Palmer home to victory. Freya had earlier helped make it a clean sweep for the Gees in the 100m and 200m by winning both B races. Eleanor Palmer won the B 800m.

In the Under 15 group Vicky Maguire won the A string high jump with a leap of 1m 50 and the 75m hurdles. In the high jump Amy de Beaux won the B event with a new lifetime best leap of 1m 45. EmilyRunton won the B hurdles race. On the field Emily McDermott and Charlotte Owens won the A and B javelin. Emily threw the discus a new best of 21m 15 to take second place in the A competition while Charlotte threw 21m 09 to win the B. In the shot Emily setting another lifetime best of 7m 07 event and Charlotte won the B with 6m 57.

In the Under 17 age group Jessica McCabe and Katy McDermott raced to victory in the 80m sprint hurdles and Jessica went on to win the B 100m with Elly Ball winning the A race. In the two lap 800m races ChloeCrossman won the A race and Elizabeth Dingemans the B. Holly Stroud won all three throwing competitions with throws of 30m 82 to win the javelin and 30m 88 to win the discus. Rebecca Leathers won both the B javelin and shot. Holly Findley was the winner of the A long jump. The afternoon ended with a win for the Under 17 sprint relay team of Katie McDermott, Katie Bingle, Elizabeth Dingemans and Charlotte Gibbs.

SOUTHERN WOMEN’S LEAGUE

Guildford and Godalming Athletic Club had a good win in their second Southern Women’s league match of the season at Thurrock. The final scores were G & G 154, Dacorum 144, Thurrock 133 and South London Harriers 117. This result brings the team up to fifth place in the league.
There were few A string winners but many seconds and thirds and also B string successes.
Vicky Maguire was the only Under 15 winner and her success came in the 75m hurdles. Annabel Sharpe won the B race. Sharpe had earlier set a lifetime best in the 100m of 14.1 and in the long jump of 4m 71. The junior discus throwers Emily McDermott and Amy de Beaux also set lifetime bests with McDermott throwing 21m 72 for her second place and de Beaux winning the B competition with 16m 44.
The 80m and 300m hurdles are the only events on the programme specifically for the Under 17 age group and Jessica McCabe claimed maximum points in the 80m sprint race with Hayley Wallis making her debut in the event coming second in the B race.
Zoe Edmonds and Holly Stroud won the senior A and B javelin with throws of 31m 18 and 26m 83 and Katie Parker set a new best in coming third in the A hammer.
On the track the only individual senior winner was Adelle Tracey who won the 1500m in a new lifetime best of 4.43.4 but the Gees had impressive victories in both relay events. The sprint team of McCabe, Elly Ball, Emily de Beaux and Isabelle Stanway won in 51.5s. The 4 x 400m team was made up of a young squad of Under 17 athletes. They were led off by Danielle Dubois who gave them a lead at the end of the first lap and this was maintained by Laura Parker on the second lap, Hayley Wallis on the third leaving Adelle Tracey to bring the team home in 4.12.9

NATIONAL YOUNG ATHLETES LEAGUE.

Guildford and Godalming Athletic club took a depleted team to Abingdon to compete in the third National Young Athletes league match of the season. Looming examinations, holidays and two fixtures on one weekend had all taken their toll and the team finished in fourth position behind Oxford City, Radley and the Isle of Wight. Nevertheless there were many good results.
The Under 15 boys had an outstanding day. Steven Lake won three A events, the shot put, high jump and javelin and in the latter two events he set lifetime bests of 1m 58 and 35m 07. Toby Borthwick won the A string 800m and 80m hurdles and Tom Butcher won both the B competitions. Borthwick also won the B javelin. Theo Raynbird and Daniel Wallis made it a clean sweep for the Gees in the 400m. Wallis, Borthwick, Butcher and Raynbird combined well to win the sprint relay.
In the oldest age group, the Under 17, Matthew Butler won the A string discus and in the shot put Butler won the B event while Jack Vanner set a new best of 9.48 in winning the A competition.
Russell Dyos and Josh Maguire made it a clean sweep for the Gees in the Under 13 75m hurdles. Hugo Madden set lifetime bests in the 200m and 1500m, as did Josh Maguire in winning the B high jump.
In the under 17 Girls competitions the only A string winner was Jessica McCabe in the 80m sprint hurdles.
Giselle Cooper improved her lifetime best in the javelin by almost a metre to 25m13. and Holly Findley set a new best in the 200m of 28s.
Maddy Austin, a finalist in last weeks South of England Championships, was a comfortable winner of the Under 15 800m in 2.22.2. Emily Runton and Jo Nordland made it a clean sweep for the Gees in the 75m hurdles winning in 12.9, a new lifetime best, and 13.00 seconds respectively. Nordland also won the B long jump and the B shot both with lifetime best performances. Multi eventers Vicky Maguire and Lily Newman won the A and B high jump and Maguire improved her shot put to 7m 77 and Newman her 100m to 13.8. The 4x 100m relay team of Newman, Gemma Williams, Runton and Maguire finished twenty metres ahead of the opposition.
For the youngest girls Jessica Hall and Bobbie Seavill were successful in winning the A and B high jump and long jump.

SOUTH OF ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS 23/24 May

ADELLE TRACEY returned home from Ashford last weekend with yet another Club record to her name. She had had to miss the Surrey Championships earlier in the month because of illness and so the South of England championships at the weekend saw her running in her first major championship of the season. She won her heat of the Under 17 800m in a comfortable 2.15.07. The fastest heat time of 2.13.47 belonged to AFD ‘s Georgia Peel and in the final it was Peel who led the way at the bell followed by Georgia Bell, Tracey and Katie Snowden from Herne Hill. Adelle continued to track Peel until 200m from home when both she and Snowden swept to the front. Adelle who is supported by a grant from the Godalming “Going for Gold” fund sprinted to victory in 2.7.57 slicing more than two seconds off her previous best and breaking Philippa Mason’s record, set in 1985, by more than a second.
Two more girls were successful in reaching finals of track events. Surrey Champion, MADDY AUSTIN took four second off her best time in the Under 15 800m when she clocked 2.18.28 to win her heat. In the final she was unfortunate to have her rhythm interrupted when a girl tripped and fell just ahead of her. Although avoiding going down herself Maddy was unable to make up the leeway and finished in sixth position.
ELLY BALL qualified for the final of the Under 17 100m with a lifetime best 12.57 and went on to finish seventh in the final.
On the field CHRISTIANNE RISMAN leapt to sixth place in the Under 17 triple jump with a distance of 10m 73

LILY B LEAGUE 23rd May

The Club were overwhelming winners of the Lily B league meeting at the Spectrum on Saturday. The final scores were G & G 391, Walton 184, Croydon 166, Sutton 145, Epsom and Ewell 82 and Dorking 66.
There was success for girls from all age groups. Under 17 A string winners included Jessica McCabe in the 80 hurdles and 200m, Amy James in the 800m and Danielle Dubois who won the 300m and the high jump with a new best of 1m 53. In the Under 15 group, Louise Heron won the 1500m in a new lifetime best of 5.06.3, Vicky Maguire won the high jump and 75m hurdles, Amy de Beaux the discus and Lily Newman the long jump.
For the youngest group Rebecca Dingemans won the 800m and 200m and Jessica Hall the long jump.

NATIONAL YOUNG ATHLETES LEAGUE MAY 17th at GUILDFORD

The team made full use of the home advantage to win their National Young Athletes League match by nearly 100 points on Sunday. The final result was G & G 441, Marshall Milton Keynes 344.5, Bracknell 329.5 and City of Salisbury 159. This handsome total has pushed us up to second place in the league. Both the boys and the girls won their sections of the competition with winners in all age groups. WELL DONE EVERYONE

Under 13 Girls
One club record was broken. Rebecca Dingemans raced to victory in the 1200 in a time of 3.51.2. to break her own record of 4.05.5 set last year. She had earlier won the 150m in a lifetime best time of 20.7.
Ellie Sergiou won the B 150m and then went on to win the 70m hurdles in a new best time of 12.6s with club mate Freya Savage taking the B race also in a lifetime best. Faye Rodgers won the A shot put AND Eleanor Palmer set a new best of 2.44.1 in taking second place in the 800m. The relay team of Bobbie Seavill, Savage, Sergiou and Dingemans finished the day on a winning note.
Under 13 Boys
Hugo Madden was an easy winner of the 800m in 2.33.5. and in the B race Jonathan Damant ran a lifetime best. There were personal best performances from Konrad Lipinski in the 200m, Jack Randell and Peter Butler in the 1500m, Nicholas Pritchard in the shot put and Russel Dyos in the 75m hurdles.
Under 15 boys
Steven Lake had an outstanding day of competition winning all three of his A events – the shot put with a new best of 9.40, the high jump and the javelin. Toby Borthwick made it a clean sweep in the javelin winning the B event. Alex Joyner won the Under 15 long jump with a lifetime best leap of 5m 25 and he also sped to victory in the 100m with Ryan Midgley winning the B race with a lietime best run. Theo Raynbird slashed a second of his personal best in winning the 400m in 55.5 and then anchored the 4 x 100m relay team of Joyner, Dominic Ray and Midgley to victory.
There were also pb’s in this age group for Midgley in the 200m, Daniel Wallis in the 400m, 1500m and discus, Tom Butcher and Ben Thompson in the 800m, Andrew Breen in the discus and long jump and Borthwick in the 80m hurdles.
Under 15 girls
Annabel Sharpe, having won the A string long jump went on to race over the 75m hurdles in a winning new personal best of 12.6s. Emily McDermott was another to win two A events, the javelin and the discus. Her discus throw of 20m 15 was a new best and Maddy Austin and Emily Spooner won the B javelin and discus events. Vicky Maguire won the A high jump having earlier made it a clean sweep for the Gees taking the B long jump.
There were pb’s for the 200m sprinters Matilda Rainsborough and Maddy Austin and for Amy Lawrence in the 800m and Louise Heron in the 1500m.
Under 17 Men
Wes Tilbury and Theo Sheehy won the A and B 800m, Tilbury with a new best of 2.12.0. David Simmonds and Jack Vanner won the A and B javelin and Jack Johnson the triple jump. There were pb’s for two sprinters. Vanner ran 100m in 11.9 and Michael Jansen 24.0. in the 200m and they joined up with Zac Gwyn Griffiths and Elliott Gent –Randell to win the sprint relay.
Other lifetime bests went to Matthew Butler and Theo Sheehy in the shot put with distances of 9m 00 and 8m 54
Under 17 Women
Christianne Risman who had to miss last weeks Surrey Championships because of illness won both A string horizontal jumps, the long with 4m 84 and the triple with 10m 40. Holly Findley made it a clean sweep for the Gees in both events. Emily de Beaux won the A high jump .
Elly Ball sprinted to victory in the Under 17 A string 100m and both she and de Beaux set new bests in the 200m of 26.4s and 26.9s. Jessica McCabe won the B string 100m having earlier won the A 80m hurdles. Amy James and Laura Parker made it a clean sweep in the 800m and Holly Stroud and Maddy Taylor did likewise in the discus. Imogen Walsh made a winning debut in the 3000m. The winning 4 x 100m relay team was Carole Date Chong, de Beaux, Findley and Ball.

SURREY CHAMPIOSHIPS – MENS REPORT

The men’s section of Guildford and Godalming Athletic Club had only five representatives at the Surrey Championships at Kingston last weekend but still managed to pick up two gold medals.
Ben Wallis showed that he is worth the faith Guildford Borough Council have in him by giving him a grant to help him further his athletic career by winning the Under 20 800m in 1.57.09 beating South London Harrier, Tom Hart.
Javelin thrower, David Simmonds was the Gees second winner. His lifetime best throw of 43m 34 was nearly two metres better than the best his opponents could manage.
Michael Jansen set a lifetime best of 24.14 in the heats of the Under 17 200m and then went on to improve it to 24.01 in the final. Chris Gibbs ran 11.85 and 23.87 in the heats of the Under 20 100m and 200m respectively and Daniel Wallis came fourth in his heat of the Under 15 800m.

SURREY CHAMPIONSHIPS – WOMEN’S REPORT

The women returned from two days competition in the Surrey championships at Kingston with a near record haul of eleven gold medals and personal bests galore. Two stalwarts of the Club, Charis O’Connor and Helen Ephgrave, won senior championships. O’Connor in recent years has been the recipient of a Guildford Borough Council grant for people of “Outstanding Sporting Ability” who are Guildford residents and is currently ranked equal sixth in the country for the high jump having jumped 1m 80 earlier in the year. At Kingston she won her title with a leap of 1m 70. She was second in the long jump with 5m 46.
Last year Helen Ephgrave was unable to defend the hammer championship that she had made her own since 2004. This year she made certain of the gold medal with a throw of 43m 27.
Zoe Edmonds, last years Under 17 javelin champion moved up to take the Under 20 event with a throw of 32m 85. Jojo Jameson won the Under 15 crown in only her second competition with the heavier 600g spear with a personal best throw of 23m 63.
There were two more high jump winners for the Club. Lily Newman won the Under 15 competition and Freya Savage the Under 13. Both girls produced personal best leaps, Newman of 1m 53 and Savage of 1m 35. Lily also won the long jump with the very last jump of the competition with a new life time best of 5m 02 and Jessica Hall won the Under 13 event with a new personal best of 4m 28. Jessica was also silver medallist in the high jump.
On the track the 800m proved to be the outstanding event for the girls in green. The under 15 race was won by Maddy Austin and the Under 13 by Rebecca Dingemans. The girls times of 2.22.9 and 2.21.79 were both lifetime bests. Jessica McCabe in only her second race over the 80m barriers took the Under 17 hurdles title in a time of 12.3s.
Vicky Maguire was second in the Under 15 high jump and the 75m hurdles. The latter with a new best of 12.14s She was third in the long jump also with a new best. Holly Stroud was second in the Under 17 shot with a personal best of 9m 68 and bronze medallist in the discus with another lifetime best
and javelin.
Poppy Disley May set no fewer than four personal bests in two days. In the heats of the 1500m she set a new best of 5.07.13 only to slash this to 4.54.6 in coming second in the final . She was chased across the finishing line by training partner Sophie Storey who also set a lifetime best of 4.56.9 On Saturday Poppy ran 800m in 2.28.3 in the heat and 2.26.98 in coming fourth in the final later in the day.
In the Under 20’s group, Isabelle Stanway and Christine Lowson, claimed bronze medals in the 200m and 800m respectively and Katie Evans in the javelin. High Jumper Abi Neate was third in the Under 17 competition.
Fourth places went to Bea Austin in the Under 13 1500m (5.29.0.), Chloe Crossman in the Under 17 800m(2.20.42) and Holly Findley in the Under 17 long jump (4m 64). All the performances were lifetime bests. Matilda Rainsborough impressed with her new best of 2.23.65 in the heats of the Under 15 800m, as did Charlotte Gibbs, running in the heats of the Under 17 200m (27.81) and 300m(44.39)
This weekend the junior members of the Club will be competing at the Spectrum in a National Young Athletes match.

NATIONAL YOUNG ATHLETES LEAGUE MAY 3rd 2009

Hayley Wallis took part in the first race to be held on the brand new track at Winchester on Sunday. She was competing for the club in the Under 17 300m hurdles in the first National Young Athletes League match of 2009. She came second in her first race over the barriers this season.
The team went on to produce many more good performances and finished the afternoon in second place just behind St. Mary’s Richmond and ahead of Winchester and Bicester/ Banbury. Valuable points were lost because the boys were unable to provide competitors for all their events.
The outstanding athlete for the boys was Theo Raynbird who was a convincing winner of the Under 15 400m, ran a lifetime best of 25.2 in the 200m and took the relay team from fourth to second place in his final leg dash.
Another A string winner was Stephen Green won both the Under 17 hammer and discus and in the latter event Matthew Butler won the B string. David Simmonds set a new best of 41m 92 in taking second place in the Under 17 javelin. Other Under 17 boys to set new personal bests were Elliott Gent Randall in the 100m and 200m, and Theo Sheehy who came second in the A 400m,
Under 15 boys Alex Joyner, Toby Borthwick and Daniel Wallis all set lifetime bests. Joyner of 26s in winning the B 200m, Borthwick of 13.6 in the 80m hurdles and 26m 82 in the javelin and Wallis of 66.6 in winning the B 400m . Konrad Lipinski came second in the Under 13 A 100m in a new best 14s and Russell Dyos raced to a lifetime best over the 80m hurdles in 15.6.
Holly Stroud cracked the 30m barrier for the first time when she threw the disc 30m 44 to win the Under 17 A event. She also won the A javelin with a throw of 30m 63 and shot put and Giselle Cooper made it a winning clean sweep for the Gees in the javelin and the discus.
Guildford won all three Under 17 jumping competitions. Christianne Risman put more than 40cms on her triple jump best winning the A event with a hop,skip and jump of 10m 87. She also won the long jump with Abi Neate winning the B event. Neate and Ellie Ball won the A and B high jump events.
On the track Adelle Tracey and Chloe Crossman were easy winners of the A and B 800m and Crossman made a winning debut in the A 300m.
For the Under 15 group Maddy Austin and Matilda Rainsborough were emphatic winners of the A and B 800m and Austin also had success on the field winning the javelin. Emily McDermott won the B javelin. Another who combined track and field success was Vicky Maguire who won the 75m hurdles and the high jump. Louise Heron slashed 13s off her previous best in winning the B 1500m in 5.10.3
In the Under 13 group Jessica Hall had an outstanding day of competition. She won the A string high jump, long jump and 70m hurdles with Bobbie Seavill making it a clean sweep in the long jump and high jump and Freya Savage in the hurdles. Rebecca Dingemans raced to what was the outstanding track performance of the day when she won the 800m in 2.23.3 finishing 80m ahead of the opposition. She also won the 75m in 10.9s.
The long day of competition ended with the relays and here the girls excelled themselves winning three out of the four events. The Under 17 4x100m team of Cooper, Risman, Crossman and Ball won in 53.7s and the 4x 300m team of Neate, Katie Bingle , Crossman and Wallis in 3m 10s. The successful Under 13 team was Seavill, Savage, Hall and Dingemans.

National Junior League 26/04/09

Because of league commitments elsewhere only a handful of Gees were able to make the journey to Portsmouth on Sunday for the National League match for Under 20’s. There were however three outstanding victories for the athletes in green. Ben Wallis won both the men’s 800m and 1500m races recording times of 1m 58.9 and 4m 13.7. In both races he appeared to cross the line with plenty in hand. Chloe Crossman knocked more than two seconds off her lifetime best with an easy victory in the 800m in 2m 21.6. Holly Findley and Emily de Beaux had encouraging runs in the sprints. Findley finished second in the A100m and de Beaux second in the A 200m.
On the field Rebecca Underhay took second place in the A triple jump and third in the long jump. Holly Stroud threw a near best 31m 20 in the javelin.

Southern Women’s League Report for 25/04/09

The Club’s Southern Women’s team had tough opposition for their first League meeting of the 2009 season. They were up against last years league winners and runners up, Windsor Slough, Eton and Hounslow and Reading. The tough opposition brought out some fine performances by the Guildford team despite the near gale force winds.
The high jump quartet, Charis O’Connor and Harriet Speed for the seniors and Vicky Maguire and Lily Newman for the juniors were all victorious despite seeing the bar being blown rather than knocked off at times. O’Connor and Speed took the A and B senior event and Maguire and Newman the junior. Vicky ‘s performance was very encouraging as her leap of 1m 54 was within one centimetre of her personal best. O’ Connor also had an A string win in the long jump with a leap of 5m 55. Fifteen-year old Christianne Risman in her first senior event was second in the B competition. In the Under 15 long jump Newman leapt 4m 73 for second in the A event while Annabel Sharpe won the B with 4m 44. Sharpe was also first in the B 75m hurdles, Maguire having taken second place in the A race
On the track Adelle Tracey opened her track season campaign in excellent form. She won the A 400m in a near pb 56.7s and the 800m in 2m 16 4s. Both events provided the Gees with clean sweeps. Chloe Crossman made a very encouraging debut over 400m winning the B race in 62s and Christine Lowson won the B 800m. Two 1500m runners set new lifetime bests. Imogen Walsh another woman making her debut as a senior ran 5m 09.1 in the A race and Poppy Disley May ran 5m09.5 for her second place in the A Under 15 race.
80m hurdlers Risman and Jessica McCabe were both given the same time 12.9s with Risman taking second place in the A event and McCabe first in the B.
The only thrower to have an A string win was the experienced Helen Ephgrave who won the senior hammer with 42m 18. Zoe Edmonds was second in the senior A javelin with 31m 42 and Katie Evans won the B event with 26m 10. Emily McDermott set a new personal best of 20m 69 for second place in the Under 15 A javelin.
