SURREY CHAMPIONSHIPS AT KINGSMEADOW MAY 10/11

Members of the Club won four gold, twelve silver and eleven bronze medals at the Surrey Championships that were held in bright sunshine at Kingsmeadow Stadium last weekend.
Two of the gold medallists were Under 17 women. Zoe Edmonds improved on her previous best by almost 2 metres to win the javelin with a throw of 31m 69. Fourteen- year old Adelle Tracey the 2007 Under 15 800m champion this year took the Under 17 title with a well judged race in a personal best equalling time of 2.12.9.
Stephen Green won the Under 15 hammer title with a new lifetime best throw.
In the youngest age group (U13) Gemma Williams whipped round 200m in 27.96s to finish a second ahead of her nearest rival
The Under 17 women’s javelin saw three Gees on the medal presentation podium, Edmonds being joined on by Holly Stroud who threw a personal best 31m 32 and Katie Evans whose best was 27m 49. Stroud added a silver medal in the discus and a bronze in the shot to her medal tally.
Katie Wren’s lifetime bests in the shot put (8m77) and hammer (24m 56) were good enough for silver medals in both Under 17 events and she added a bronze in the discus.
The youngest Gees competitor, eleven- year old Josh Maguire, won the silver medal in the javelin with a throw of 18m.23.
The Under 17 horizontal jumps specialist Becci Underhay set new bests in the long jump (5m 16) and triple jump (10m 48) the latter being good enough for the silver medal. In the younger age groups Christianne Risman leapt 4m 80 to come second in the Under 15 long jump and Gemma Williams stretched to 4m 15
to win silver in the U13 event.
On the track two hurdlers grabbed silver medals with lifetime best times-Robert Jaye in the Under 17 100m race with 14.6s and Jessica McCabe in the Under 15 75m race with 11.79s. Christine Lowson and Rebecca Dingemans had silver success in the two- lap race. Christine was competing in the Under 20 women’s race – her first track race following a long period of injury. Rebecca ran a lifetime best 2.30.15 in the Under 13 race.
Michael Jansen in his first Surrey Championships raced to a personal best time and bronze medal in the Under 15 200m and the more experienced Chris Gibbs set new best figures of 53.1s in taking bronze in the Under 17 men’s 400m.
Three girls won bronze medals on the track. Eleanor Ball was third in the Under 17 100m having run a lifetime best 13.01 in the heats and Vicky Maguire snatched bronze in the 75m hurdles (12.8). Yasmin Goater’s third place came in the Under 20 1500m.
Two javelin throwers won bronze medals both with lifetime best throws. David Simmonds threw 39m 59 in the U17 event and Giselle Cooper 21.47 in the Under 15. Emily Runton leapt into new territory winning the bronze medal in the Under 13 long jump (4.00).
The very big disappointment of the championships was the abandonment of all the high jump events. Following an injury to the Club’s ace high jumper Charis O’Connor during the warm up for the senior event the mat was declared unsafe for use. The Club had competitors entered for all the age groups in the women’s high jump events and many were medal prospects.

Southern Women’s League on April, 26th.

The Club’s women’s team made a splendid start to their Southern League (Premier Division) campaign winning their first match at Dacorum on Saturday. The final scores were Guildford and Godalming 154, Chelmsford 136, Dacorum 124 and Ealing 113.

The first field event to be completed saw Charis O’ Connor break the Club’s senior long jump record by 11 cms when she leapt out to 5m 75. Charis, who has always considered the high jump to be her main event, then went on to win the event in difficult blustery conditions by 15cms, clearing 1m 75. Harriet Speed won the B event.

The other outstanding A string winners were two girls who were having their first experience not only of senior competition but also of new events. Fifteen year old Joanna Klaptocz won the 3000m, twice the distance she has previously run on the track, in a time of 10min 50s. Fourteen- year old Adelle Tracey sprinted one lap of the track to win the 400m in 58.2s. Fiona Love won the B 3000m to make it a clean sweep for the Gees.

Two more girls who have just moved up from the Under 15 ranks recorded personal best times in senior races. Ellie Ball ran 27.4 in the 200m and came first in the B 100m with a best equalling time of 13.1s. Abbey Fewell was third in the A 800m in 2.32.9

On the field discus thrower Katie Parker was delighted to have cracked the 30m barrier in her first competition of 2008 having had numerous near misses in 2007.

The hurdles are the only races included in the programme specifically for the Under 17’s and Hayley Wallis, in only her second race in the event, won the A string 300m hurdles.

In the under 15 age group there were 3 clean sweeps for the Gees in the A and B string events. On the field Vicky Maguire and Abi Neate won the high jump, Vicky with a leap of 1m 45 and Neate with a best equalling jump of 1m 35. Maddie Taylor and Neate both set new figures in winning the discus, Maddie of 20m10 and Abi of 16m 17. Maddie also set new bests in the shot and the javelin.

On the track Jessica McCabe and Christianne Risman were winners in the A and B 75m hurdle races. Jessica set personal bests in the 100m and 200m of 13.4s and 27.3s respectively.

Guildford & Godalming Athletic Club's senior men are fighting to stay in Surrey Cross Country's Division 1 this year. Having lost a few of their stars recently the Gs are battling to fill the higher spots in the races which is so crucial for them to stay in Surrey's top division. In the first match of the season on Wimbledon Common hosted by Belgrave Harriers on 13 October, the Gs managed 8th out of nine which put them in relegation territory alongside Wimbledon Windmilers some 49 points behind. Last Saturday's race, also on the common but this time hosted by Thames Hare & Hounds, saw an excellent turnout of Gs, 18 this time, digging deep to try to avoid relegation. They finished stronger on the day but not strong enough to better their 8th spot or lift them out of the relegation zone. They trail Coulsdon's South London Harriers by a mere 93 points, but are still 219 ahead of the last-placed Windmilers, and hope that a strong performance at the next two matches in January and February 2008 will lift them out of relegation and secure their 2008/9 season in the top division. A consistently reliable Mark Tennyson led the team home, followed by a somewhat stiff-legged Jeff Pyrah who, just six days previously, ran the New York Marathon in 2h37. Ben Wallis was 4th in his first outing as a senior, and veteran Jon Earnshaw closed the scoring ten. Eight green vests followed with newcomers Lewis Brown and John Parker in 11th and 14th respectively, and an ever-faithful Ed Banyard-Smith bringing up the rear of the team, but by no means the rear of the field.

The first GGAC 5km time trial will be held on Saturday 22nd September at 09:00am in Stoke Park.

In the coming months this will become a regular monthly event taking place on the first Saturday of the month. The intention with the first two time trials is to get as many GGACers out to run the route and get to know it before we open it to the wider public any new runners will be able to follow the GGACers who know the route. Opening this to the public from November once we have had two trial runs on 22 Sept and 6 October. (Note - if you are involved in any way in the juniors' XC relays in Stoke Park on 6 Oct, please make the right decision as to which one to attend, i.e. time trial or relay.)

Ian Durrant has devised a route which, according to a website using satellite tracking, is exactly 5km. The route will be accurately measured at some point with kilometre markings will be indicated around the course to help you around. Marshalls are therefore not required. Details of the November et seq. time trials will be posted on the Runner's World website in due course.

In summary therefore:
DATE: Sat 22 Sept
FUTURE DATES: first Saturday of the month, i.e. 6 Oct, 3 Nov, 1 Dec, 5 Jan, 2 Feb etc.
DATE FROM WHICH OPEN TO PUBLIC: 3 Nov
TIME: 09:00
VENUE: Stoke Park, opposite Spectrum entrance
DISTANCE: 5km (3.1mi)

The intention of organising these time trials is to provide a service to GGAC members, and just as importantly to raise the club's profile and attract more members. I would appreciate as much support as possible in the form of you coming out to run these time trials, and together we can generate wider interest in the club. All GGAC members are welcome, regardless of whether you run 14 minutes or 40 minutes for 5km.

ALDER VALLEY LEAGUE CUP 16th September
For their final meeting of the season the girls travelled to Reading where they competed in the Alder Valley League Cup. Having won the trophy for the Under 15 age group in the league we were hopeful that we might be able to upset the Cup holders Windsor, Slough, Eton and Hounslow. However as the afternoon progressed it became clear that Windsor were going to hold on to the Cup and that the real tussle would be between Guildford and Reading for second place. Trailing until the last few events we scrambled in to second place thanks to some good javelin throwing and teamwork in the relays.
In winning the under 15 A string javelin Holly Stroud threw three successive lifetime best throws and her final effort of 30m 47 broke the Club record. Sarah Waterman won the B javelin and the Under 13 combination of Maddy Austin and Jo Jo Jameson won the Under 13 Javelin.
Vicky Maguire showed why she is the newly crowned Surrey Pentathlon (multi events) Champion. She leapt a season’s best 1m 36 in the high jump, equalled her best 70m hurdles time of 12.1 although she was just edged into second place and set a new best of 1.51.7 in the 600m. The U13 sprint relay quartet-Jessica Warner, Lucy Cuckow, Maguire and Giulia Dijk sped round the track to finish second in 57.8s.
Adelle Tracey bought her successful season to a close with a comfortable victory in the Under 15 1500m and Jessica McCabe notched up another victory in the Under 15 A string 75m hurdles. McCabe, Elly Ball, Charlotte Gibbs and Emily de Beaux were second in the relay.
Isabelle Stanway in her last race as an Under 17 sprinted to victory in the 100m. Rebecca Underhay and Jemma Neate made it a clean sweep for the Gees in the triple jump. Neate won the B event with a new best of 9m 15. Underhay had earlier leapt into unknown territory in the long jump with her leap of 4m 88 Rebecca Fairhead set a new best of 2m in the pole vault and went on to knock nearly 4 seconds off her best in the 1500m with a time of 5m 16. 4. The Under 17 sprint relay team of Amelia Chong, Underhay, and the Stanway sisters Isabelle and Louise set a season’s best time of 52.8s to bring the afternoons competition to a close.
Final result 1)Windsor, Slough , Eton and Hounslow 212, Guildford and Godalming 172.5, Reading 165.5,
Aldershot, Farnham and District 124
