Surrey Cross Country County Championship – Race Report

A flash of emerald shone through the January gloom at the weekend, as five of Guildford and Godalming’s finest shrugged off the New Year blues to compete in the Surrey Cross Country Championships at Lloyd Park in Croydon. Matthew Lythell, Marc Woodall, Ben Evans, Mark Tennyson and Patrick Angell took their places amongst the elite of the South east’s running talent to represent G&G over the 12km course and put in a creditable performance in tough conditions.

Evans, fresh from December victory in the Portsmouth Coastal Marathon, slid through the mud to finish in 40th place in 47.31, while Tennyson and Woodall both registered strong top half finishes in 80th and 90th place.

With the course churning into a boggy morass, Angell crossed the line a few minutes later in 58.59 backed up by G&G stalwart Lythell in 62.15.

The Spectrum club are now looking for kinder conditions as they relaunch their Surrey League campaign at Newlands Corner this weekend.
