Yateley 10k 1st June 2011

Yateley 10k 1st June 2011

It was a week where Britain enjoyed a continental late spring. The sun shone into the night, bronzed beauties wandered the streets, wine flowed and barbecues sizzled and donkeys sported sombreros. No-one was in any hurry and everyone seemed happy.

That was apart from GGAC athletes Ben Evans, Louise Durnan, Tom Paltridge Dave Maughan and Alistair Gibson who upheld traditional British values in a not-particularly-scenic corner of North Hampshire, by running in the Yateley 10k. No donkeys here.

As the ice cream van piped out Jerusalem and the participants sweated with worry, a gun fired, and like the Battle of Waterloo, Britain finest charged over the fields to stick one in the face of Jonny Foreigner. !First home was Evans in a time of 34.51 in forth, as he fended off a late surge from his own personal Napoleon – Justin Mitchell of Woking. He was soon followed Tom Paltridge in 37.54, ducking through heavy Sandhurst Joggers fire, to storm through in 23rd. Cunningly disguised in the colours of Stroud and District, Louise Durnan launched a stealth attach to finish in 40.35 and 3rd woman overall. Then came Dave Maughan, the GGAC Wellington, completing a Guildford quartet in the top 100 in a time of 42.56. With the sun still beating over Yateley Comprehensive fields, Alistair Gibson completed the ensemble in a PB time of 43.09 for 110th place.

With pace like this we all still had time for a quick cup of tea and a moan before heading indoors to watch Eastenders. Rule Britannia.

Full results are available on the road running tab in results, and the next Yateley 10K is on the 6th July 2011.
